Thursday, July 31st, 2008
What actual use to the public, are Select Committees of the House of Commons, and the Reports which they publish ? The Labour Government invariably cherry picks a quotation from the summary of such a Report, especially if it was written by a Labour Chairman of the Committee e.g. Government Response to the Home Affairs Committee: A Surveillance Society? (.pdf) leaped on the phrase , We reject crude characterisations of our society as a surveillance society in which all collection and means of
Staying Safe While Looking Good
Thursday, July 31st, 2008
While safety is always something that we think about from time to time, very few of us realize how dangerous things can actually be. I don’t live in the best part of the Bay Area, but I had always assumed that the area I lived in was safer than most. It never crossed my mind to worry about if I was in danger on my daily walks to and from work and, just like many ladies out there, didn’t think twice about practically carrying my life in my purse. As those who keep up with me on Plurk or LiveJour
Desperate McCain Tries to Play Terror Card One More Time
Thursday, July 31st, 2008
McCain can swing the election if his campaign can only convince enough of them to vote with their hearts, or their guts, for the "experienced" Vietnam war hero. So he and his handlers naturally want to turn the campaign into a simple moral drama: Sixties values -- or the nation's security and your own? Take your pick.

Of Web Shops And Clicking With the influx of modern technology into our lives, more services are made easier. New gadgets, tools, and modes of transportation make essential human functions like communication and transportation a breeze. Of these developments, none has made as much impact as the Internet. Orange bin unlimited data plans 01 Aug 2008 We've had a couple of emails about this now, so we're slowly beginning to realise that it isn't some sort of joke. Believe it or not, Orange appear to have put a stop the unlimited data bundles as of yesterday. Unlimited bundles included in the £30 and £35 tariffs have ended and instead you'll now have to pay £7.50 per month extra for 250Mb, rather than the 500Mb cap that was included with the free bundle. Martin Clinton walked into an
Eco Friendly Corn Cards
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008
Sponsored hotel card keys are getting to be common at conferences, but at the Ag Media Summit it was the first time I noticed them being made from corn-based plastic. I don’t usually scrutinize my hotel card keys, so there could very well have been at any one or more of the meetings I have been at in the last year or two - but I noticed it this time. Apparently these cards have been commercially available for about two years. CornCard USA offers the product, which can also be used for credit c

So... I go to the DMV today to tag my car and switch my MS license over to AR. Because I want this to be as painless as possible, I do my research. Back in June, I tried to switch my license over, so I went online to find out what the requirements were. I found out all I needed to do was bring my license and my social security card. However, when I get there, I am told that they no longer accept social security cards as a form of ID (even though their website clearly states that's all I need).

RWB: Advice for foreign journalists covering human rights situation during Beijing Games
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008
Reporters without borders: With less than two weeks to go to the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the human rights situation in China has never been such a burning issue. The government’s all-out focus on security and its crackdown on human rights activists are as important as the sports events themselves. The authorities have denied the existence of any crackdown although around 10 Chinese activists have been detained for criticising the way the Olympic Games are being organised. It

Blank passports stolen
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008
The Identity & Passport Service has lost 3,000 blank passports and visas after thieves robbed a security van while the driver was in the newsagents. The IPS said that the passports can’t be used because of the security chip but this is utter bollocks. They can be used at home and abroad as ID and could be used to travel abroad through ports that don’t use the chipped passports. They can also be read by commercially available, perfectly legal RFID scanners and cracked with open-source, perfe
