Compulsory ID Cards Scrapped
In his first major announcement since replacing Jacqui Smith, Home Secretary Alan Johnson last night reversed years of Labour policy by halting plans for compulsory ID cards. Once hailed as vital in the fight against terrorism but facing ‘Big Brother’ accusations from critics, the scheme has already cost taxpayers £200 million.
